Friends launch new Caribbean restaurant The Drop in Chorlton

Two friends with a passion for Caribbean food have opened a new restaurant and bar inspired by food from the region.

Ez Saunders and Jimmy Gill welcomed customers to their brand new Chorlton eatery, The Drop during an official opening party last Friday.

The boys say the restaurant and bar offers something completely unique to the area and are excited about expanding their menu of Caribbean food and rum-based cocktails.

Caribbean favourites such as curry goat, jerk chicken and ackee and saltfish are all on the menu, as well as Caribbean rum punch.

Ez, 28, worked for his dad Aval for several years at his popular chain of Caribbean takeaways Kool Runnings, in Fallowfield, Hulme and Longsight.

While trained chef Jimmy, 28, from West Didsbury, has years of experience working in the food industry.

Ez said the friends were keen to create a vibrant and lively bar which reflects Caribbean culture and were delighted when the shop on Barlow Moor Road became available.

He said: “It’s a Caribbean jerk rum bar but with modern Caribbean food.

“We want it to be a lively place with good food and good music. We want people to be lively and chatty here. It’s colourful place so we want the atmosphere to reflect that.

“My dad owns Kool Runnings and I used to work for him. In the end I thought, why not do something on my own.

“Working with my dad has had a huge influence on the food and from a business sense too. He came from Jamaica without a dollar in his pocket and has made something phenomenal in my eyes.”

The pair worked hard to refurbish the venue using recycled wood, spray paint and graffiti to create a beach hut style.

Ez said: “We really wanted it to stand out. We got a load of wood and spray painted it to give it a nice drift wood effect.

“We wanted to get a real beach hut effect.

Over the next few weeks Ez and Jimmy will develop the cocktail menu and introduce breakfast items, including a modern Creole take on French toast using hard dough bread.

Ez added: “So far it’s going really well. There were at least 70 people at the opening on Friday and we’ve been really popular so far and had some good reviews.

“I think it’s unique for Chorlton and we’ve really landed on our feet with the location.”
