More from the Gleaner

Who will be this year's king/queen of the grill? Will the title return to Kingston? These questions and more will be answered come June 17 when the battle on the grills heats up, serving up some of the most unique barbecue flavours and dishes.

With the official launch taking place on Wednesday at the Fiction Lounge, organiser Craig Powell is anticipating one of the biggest stagings since its inception in 2007.

With 18 teams participating last year, Powell is aiming for a maximum of 30 this year. "That number can be accommodated and, if it happens, it will be the largest one so far."

As part of the food event's staging, there are also plans for a celebrity chef to be invited to participate. This, which has not yet been finalised, is to be facilitated by the Jamaica Tourist Board. And, according to Powell, if it happens, it will help to advertise Jamaica to the world.

A family event, patrons will be privy to samples of food from the competitors from midday to four in the afternoon. And to keep the children occupied, parents can comfortably allow their children to be part of the Ocean Spray Wata Kiddies Village, which should keep them going throughout the day.

To be staged at the Hope Gardens, grillers will be competing in the categories of chicken, beef/lamb, seafood and pork.

The winners, who will receive a cash prize and trophy, will also be guaranteed a trip to represent Jamaica in the American Royal Association's Annual World Series of Barbecue in October.

So, if you think you can grill, sign up now for the exciting, fun and sizzling Appleton Estate All Jamaica Grill Off. Get those recipes going, and patrons, be prepared to get served up some amazing barbecue flavours that will tantalise your taste buds all day. Sounds good, doesn't it? Make it a date!

On March 21, Heineken Jamaica will launch Heineken Inspire, a competition open to creative consumers. Heineken Inspire is a competition of the arts aiming to enliven the creative nature of individuals in our population.

The premium beer brand is hoping to discover the entrepreneurs, film producers, artistes and fashion designers of the next generation by using its product as the inspiration behind their masterpieces.

According to Nasha Douglas, Heineken brand manager, the brand known the world over for creating avenues for talented consumers to show their talent is at it again.

"The tremendous success of the Heineken Green Synergy project over the years has attracted countless talents and has led to the explosion of new fresh faces on the DJ circuit. We hope that this campaign and competition will broaden that scope and reach. We expect this to hone unearthed talents in the four categories of film, fashion, music and art," Douglas said.

Individuals interested in competing in the four separate categories of Film, Art, Fashion and Music can do so by uploading their 'inspired' creations to the Heineken Inspired Facebook page. The brand will also be having live tours across the island in search of talents at various locations during Heineken Happy Hours. Contestants entering the competition on these tours will be given the opportunity to perform live or submit their entries to Facebook.

These pieces will be deliberated on by a panel of esteemed judges. The number of 'likes' posted for the pieces will also count towards selection.

The finalists chosen in the different categories will have their creations on display, films premiered, designs modelled or the opportunity to perform at the Heineken Inspire event. The winners will receive a Mac Pro Book or cash and a one-on-one time with a successful mentor in their respective field.

"Jamaica is full of great talent, artistry and creative minds, we encourage all to be a part of this competition and be inspired," Douglas ended.

The Heineken Inspire event will be held on April 28 at a location to be disclosed on the day of the event.

Dominica featured on "No Kitchen Required"

  • PDF

In the first episode of this adrenaline-inducing series, the chefs rappel into the lush land of the Caribbean island, Dominica. Equipped with only their knives and secret ingredients of choice, they are warmly welcomed by host Dr. Shini Somara and the Kalinago community.

After a traditional performance by the locals and an exquisite feast, the chefs set out in search for the ingredients for their meals. But before they can dish up the catch of the day, they must first master spearfishing, track a manicou through the dense jungle, blindly hunt for crustaceans in dangerously murky waters and forage for tropical fruits and root vegetables like coconuts and yams.

Guilty pleas in Caribbean gay cruise arrests

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Two Southern California men pleaded guilty on Thursday to indecent exposure in Dominica after they were arrested during a stop on a gay cruise of the Caribbean.

John Robert Hart, 41, and Dennis Jay Mayer, 43, of Palm Springs, said they regretted their actions. Police said they were seen having sex in plain sight of people on land, prompting officers to board the ship and arrest them on Wednesday.

"We humbly apologize to the people of Dominica," both men said during the hearing.

The two initially were arrested on suspicion of the local equivalent of sodomy in the eastern Caribbean island, which prohibits sex between two men.

The men's attorney, Bernadette Lambert, said they were remorseful.

"They were struck by the beautiful mountains, the clean and clear fresh air and were having a few cocktails, and so threw caution to the wind," she told the court.

Chief Magistrate Evaline Baptiste ordered the men to pay a nearly $900 fine after calling them "rogues and vagabonds." They made no comment after the hearing and police drove the men to the airport after they were released.

The two were aboard the Celebrity Summit cruise ship that had departed Puerto Rico on Saturday with about 2,000 passengers. The ship departed for St. Barts late Wednesday, leaving the men behind.
