Foot Candy Couture Review

  • PDF

Lawn chairs, comfy cushions, wine, cheeses, hot dogs, cool music and persons casually engaging in conversations. Were it not for the runway placed squarely in the middle of the lawn it would have been the setting for a very chic garden party. Such was the scene for the grand opening of Foot Candy Couture’s new location at 8 Hillcrest Avenue. Foot Candy Couture, a high end boutique owned and operated by Lisa-Gaye Chin specializes in unique well made pieces and aims to give clients an intimate shopping experience in a beautiful atmosphere.

Shenna Carby 2012 Collection at Caribbean Fashion Week

The runway show that heralded the opening of this location featured some local designers whose pieces would certainly fit in with the Foot Candy image. Shenna Carby , Mission Catwalk’s 2011 winner showcased a few pieces from her line Journey , the standout piece being an emerald green jumpsuit that would be perfect for the summer perhaps styled with metallic sandals and a pop of colour be it from a bag , jewellery or one of the Essie nail polishes available at Foot Candy.

Haiti: design for development

The IDB’s Multilateral Investment Fund, Donna Karan and others forge partnership to boost Haitian handcrafts value chain

When fashion designer and philanthropist Donna Karan first traveled to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, she was shocked by the scale of destruction and despair. But even amid the rubble she saw glimmers of hope in people making beautiful objects out of stone, metal, wood, paper and bone. In a matter of months, her Urban Zen Foundation launched the Haitian Artisan Project, with the mission of helping talented craftsmen and women gain access to high-end markets.

Over the past two years Karan invested time and money in the project, providing financial assistance and guidance to artisans in Port-au-Prince, Léogâne and Jacmel, cities ravaged by the quake. Those efforts resulted in a line of remarkable home decoration articles and fashion accessories, some which will be on display at the art gallery of the Inter-American Development Bank’s Cultural Center until June 27. The “Discover Haiti” exhibit, first held at the Urban Zen Center in New York City, will soon travel to London for the Summer Olympics.

At a reception held for the official opening of the exhibition on June 13 in Washington, DC, Karan joined Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe in inviting participants to “look at Haiti through a different lens.” The designer, who is also assisting the Haitian government in showing the Caribbean country as a place brimming with creativity and promise, urged Haiti’s friends to work in partnership: “We just have to get together and make it happen.”

Lamothe thanked Karan and actor Sean Penn, who attended the event, for their work in Haiti and commended the artists and artisans responsible for the prints and objects featured in Discover Haiti for upholding their culture and for promoting their country. “Things are improving. Things are getting better. Things are moving in the right direction,” Lamothe said.

Prior to the reception, former U.S. president Bill Clinton and IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno held a public discussion on how the international community, the private sector and non-profits could help Haiti overcome its economic challenges. One of the keys, they agreed, would be to pool efforts and coordinate with the Haitian government, in order to achieve greater impact.

In that spirit, earlier in the day, Karan met with an IDB team led by Executive Vice President Julie T. Katzman and Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) General Manager Nancy Lee. They were joined by representatives from other organizations interested in promoting entrepreneurship in Haiti, including the Clinton Foundation, which has worked with Urban Zen to open foreign markets for Haitian artisans.

The goal of the meeting was to discuss a value-chain approach to the Haitian handicraft sector. The MIF is already funding projects of that nature in Haiti involving mango and coffee production. According to an assessment commissioned by the MIF, tens of thousands of Haitian artisans could benefit from such an approach, which would tackle a range of problems not addressed by more narrowly focused projects that reach fewer people.

femheka

  • PDF

Designer Raxann Chin on May 11, 2012 gave a preview of her New York based fashion line, femheka, a name which stands for "feminine magical goddess". Three designs were  presented by the evening's goddesses Daina, Phylicia and Amanda with makeup done by Paul March. The looks served as appetizers for the full showing of femheka due at Caribbean Fashion Week just weeks away.

The team behind femheka's launch, is to be commended for their professionalism. The zen inlfuenced concept for the showcase and choice of location were very good given the limited number of  pieces. Also, the attention to detail in the execution of the occasion is not surprising given the designer's former high-profiled corporate role in Merrill Lynch's Vice President Program.

For the looks there was an offering of three ready-to-wear dresses which included an olive-coloured Grecian draped dress. The collection is not trying to be  cutting edge but does comes across with an air of sophistication and elegance. My personal favourite look of the evening was actualy not worn by any model but on the designer herself- Raxanne.

As a budding designer about to show on one of the biggest platforms in the region, it is hoped that she continues to give of her best and continues to express herself creatively through this unique forum. In the years to come, femheka has the potential to grow and be established as a leading fashion house.
